Global Condom Shortage Roots
The Guardian reported in a recent article that the biggest producer of condoms in the world, a Malaysian company Karex Bhd, was forced to stop its production to prevent the spreading of COVID-19 from person-to-person while working.
Now when most people are at home, waiting for the pandemic to slow down, it’s evident that a lot of couples are having sex more often. But with the shortage of condoms, both your health and chances of preventing a pregnancy become compromised.
Condoms are just one of the many products whose production has slowed in some countries. Karex Bhd was forced to shut down the production during a lockdown, so warehouses of numerous internationally-marketed companies that depend on the Karex condom production could go out of stock soon.
The Malaysian company hasn’t produced anything for the past week, but since then, they restarted the production with 50% of workers. According to Guardian, the chief executive, Goh Miah Kiat said that “it will take time to jumpstart factories and we will struggle to keep up with demand at half capacity” and that “we are going to see a global shortage of condoms everywhere, which is going to be scary.”
It is especially scary for the developing countries, which depend on humanitarian help and where the shortage can take up to months, endangering both the supply chain and the people’s health. Also, having children is probably the last thing on our minds in these uncertain and confusing times.
